Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Think and Grow Rich appeared in 1937, at the end of the Great Depression, and it sold millions at a time when almost nobody had money to spare. Napoleon Hill claimed to have distilled it from twenty years of interviews with the most successful people in America, beginning with Andrew Carnegie, whose advice was to write a success philosophy from first principles.
The book is built as thirteen principles: desire, faith, auto-suggestion, specialised knowledge, imagination, organised planning, decision, persistence, the master mind, the mystery of sex transmutation, the subconscious mind, the brain, and the sixth sense. Whether or not you accept its more mystical claims, the operating spine is practical: clarity, persistence, a written plan and an environment of people who push you.
About Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hill (1883-1970) was an American self-help writer from a one-room cabin in rural Virginia. He worked as a journalist and publicist before publishing The Law of Success in 1925 and Think and Grow Rich in 1937. He spent the rest of his life teaching and writing on achievement.
Why you should read Think and Grow Rich
This is the book that named the whole genre. Read it for the structure: a definition of a goal so precise it can be measured, a plan that says what you will trade for it, and a daily reading of both. Even read sceptically, it is the clearest surviving snapshot of how American ambition learned to talk to itself, and its principles of persistence and masterminding are still doing real work.
5 key lessons from the book
- Burn the boats: fixed, definite purpose beats a flexible wish list every time.
- Faith here is operational — belief repeated until it governs behaviour.
- Specialised knowledge only pays when it is organised and directed at a specific aim.
- A master mind of aligned people produces ideas no individual member could reach alone.
- Persistence is the only quality that reliably converts talent into results.
How This Book Helps With Modern Careers
The original 1937 Think and Grow Rich is the direct ancestor of the modern coaching economy. Best life coach certification programs paraphrase its thirteen principles so often that students meet them twice: first as Hill wrote them, later as a slide. The master mind chapter alone explains why so many best mastermind groups for entrepreneurs are structured the way they are.
For money work, the book complements money mindset coaching and financial freedom coaching, but it should be read as philosophy rather than financial planning for retirement advice. Wealth management services and online financial planner professionals will tell you the same thing: the book changes your behaviour around money, not your asset allocation.
It is also popular in online personal development courses and best self development books 2026 round-ups, largely for the persistence chapter, which remains the most quoted answer to why most plans fail in month three.
