The Kybalion by Three Initiates
The Kybalion is a small book published in 1908 under the name Three Initiates, presenting what it calls the Hermetic philosophy of ancient Egypt and Greece in seven principles. Its central claim is that the universe is mental: thought is not a by-product of reality but the substance of it, and the person who understands the laws of mind can work with them instead of against them.
The seven principles — mentalism, correspondence, vibration, polarity, rhythm, cause and effect, and gender — are short enough to memorise and broad enough to argue with for years. Modern readers tend to arrive through entrepreneurship, where the book is quoted as a metaphysics of expectation, and stay for the compression: it is a complete model of experience in under a hundred pages.
About Three Initiates
The Kybalion was published by the Yogi Publication Society of Chicago in 1908. Three Initiates is a pseudonym, widely believed to cover William Walker Atkinson, a prolific New Thought author and publisher who wrote under several names. The text claims descent from Hermes Trismegistus, a fusion of the Greek Hermes and Egyptian Thoth.
Why you should read The Kybalion
If you have read As a Man Thinketh and Think and Grow Rich and want the philosophical layer underneath them, this is the missing book. It gives a vocabulary for why attention changes outcomes, why extremes flip into each other, and why the direction of a life is set by what it repeatedly dwells on. Short, strange, and unusually portable.

- Everything vibrates; raise the rate of your thinking and the circumstances around you shift.
- Polarity means opposites are the same thing at different degrees — useful for transmuting fear into drive.
- Rhythm guarantees that moods swing; the skilled do not fight the swing, they compensate for it.
