What Does Public Domain Mean for Books?
By onlinknow.co.za Team·28 October 2026·6 min read

Public domain is the reason a 1903 essay can be read on a website for nothing, while a 1998 novel cannot. It is not a grey area and it is not charity. It is copyright expiring, on a schedule, for everyone at once — and once a work enters the public domain, nobody can take it back out.
What public domain actually means
A work is in the public domain when no person or company holds copyright in it any more. That can happen because copyright expired, because the author released it, or because it never qualified for protection in the first place. For books, expiry is the usual route.
Once a book is in the public domain you may read it, copy it, print it, translate it, record it, sell it, or republish it — without asking permission or paying a licence fee. That is why there are nine different editions of As a Man Thinketh and none of them owe royalties.
Why books published before 1929 are free in the United States
Under current US law, works published in 1928 or earlier have passed the end of their term and are in the public domain. Since 2019, another year of titles has entered the public domain every 1 January: 1929 titles in 2025, 1930 titles in 2026, and onward one year at a time.
Books published between 1929 and 1977 are more complicated. Many are still protected for 95 years from publication, and some simply lapsed because their copyright was never renewed. This is why the title and the edition matter. The original 1937 Think and Grow Rich is generally treated as public domain; a later revised edition with new material is not necessarily.
How long does copyright last?
In the United States, works published today are protected for the life of the author plus 70 years. Older rules applied 28 years plus a 28-year renewal, and the measurement depends on when the work was published and whether formalities were met.
In the United Kingdom and the European Union, the rule is generally the author's life plus 70 years. Canada and New Zealand use life plus 50 years for many works. That means a book can be free in one country and still protected in another, which is why serious reprints check the author's death date rather than the publication date alone.
Beware: the original may be free, the translation may not
This is the trap most people fall into. The Tao Te Ching was written in the fourth century BC, but a 2019 English translation by a living translator carries its own copyright. The ancient text is free; the modern rendering is not.
onlinknow.co.za only uses translations and editions that are themselves out of copyright. So you are reading Meditations in an older public domain rendering rather than a branded contemporary one — legally identical to any modern version, and free.
Can you sell public domain books?
Yes. You can print a public domain book and sell it, and several publishers do exactly that. What you cannot do is claim copyright over the original text or stop others from doing the same thing. You can own your new cover, your layout and any genuinely new annotations — not the words of the book.
That openness is the point. It is the same reason these titles can be offered to you free, in full, with no registration: no licence negotiation is required, because there is no licensing party.
Where to read public domain books free
You can hunt through university archives and text dumps, or you can read a curated shelf built for people who actually want to finish a book. onlinknow.co.za collects fifty-plus verified public domain classics — As a Man Thinketh, Meditations, The Science of Getting Rich, Tao Te Ching, the Bhagavad Gita and more — each split into readable chapters with no login and no download.
If you are new to the collection, start with the ten best public domain self development books and work backwards from there.
Why public domain matters if you coach, teach or create courses
If you run an online life coaching course, a best life coach certification programs cohort, or a high ticket coaching program, clear public domain status is an operational advantage. You can quote at length, print extracts for clients, and build workbooks around the original text without negotiating rights or worrying about takedowns.
The same applies to best time management courses, career coaching certification training and online personal development courses that assign reading. A 1903 essay can be quoted in full; a 2019 trade paperback cannot. Coaches building money mindset coaching material around The Science of Getting Rich are on firm ground because the 1910 text belongs to everyone.
For mindfulness and mental health, the boundary is worth stating plainly. Public domain books are reading material, not treatment. Cognitive behavioural therapy online providers, best online counseling services and licensed therapist near me directories are the right routes for clinical support, and affordable therapy online options exist in most countries. A library like this complements that work — it does not replace it.
Finally, transparency helps your audience: say where the text came from, which translation you used, and that the author died long before copyright could be renewed. Readers trust that, and search engines reward it.
